Conscription Extended


 Compulsory conscription in the UK is increased to include married men

A Good Sausage Maker


A married butcher was denied a postponement of his call up. One of the panel observed that he was sorry the applicant had to go as he made the best sausages in Norwich.

Battle of Jutland


 The British Grand Fleet confronts the German High Seas Fleet in the North Sea, off the coast of Denmark. Although the British lose more ships, the German fleet is driven back to port and remains there for the rest of the war.

Women and Tea Blending


Norwich tea merchants applied for exemption for one of their Managers as all their single men had joined the army.

One of the firm’s representatives said that although women made good assistants, they were totally incapable of taking a job as a Manager.
