General Sir Douglas Haig replaces Field Marshall Sir John French as Commander in Chief of the B.E.F on the Western Front.

 

Motivational Speech

 

The Lord Bishop of Norwich visited the Y.M.C.A Soldiers’ recreation room in North Walsham and talked to the 120 men present declaring his hope that “they would keep strong  in body and principle” and be “prepared for any contingency that might arise during the stern realities of warfare.”

 

Evacuation of Gallipoli

 

British and ANZAC troops are evacuated from the beachheads in Gallipoli as the campaign in the Dardanelles fails.

 

Astronomy Talks Draw to a Close

 

Although having to contest with poor visibility of the stars, Prof. Bailey concluded his talks on astronomy at the Norwich Technical Institute; a knowledge of such a topic which has proven useful to soldiers in helping to find their way in the dark.

 

  Red Cross Hospital Christmas

 

Letheringsett Red Cross Hospital celebrated Christmas with decorations, a church service in the morning, then a Christmas dinner cooked by the V. A. D. cooks, followed by games and gifts at the Village Hall which had been put at their disposal by its trustees.
