Battle of the Somme in Cinemas


A documentary film about the Battle of the Somme released for viewing in 34 cinemas in London. Nationwide release follows a week later. The film is the first documentary to show actual footage of men fighting in battle. It is seen by more than 20 million people

Son Must Fight


The Norfolk Appeal Tribunal dismisses a mother’s appeal for her 19 year old son to not have to go to war because he was “practically the breadwinner” as she was in bad health and her husband had been declared an invalid for 10 years. The head of the appeal court, Lieutenant Costello stated, “I am very sorry, but what do you suggest the nation should do if we don’t get soldiers?”

War Spreads


Rumania enters the war on the Allied side but is quickly defeated by Germany, Austria-Hungary and Bulgaria.

Italy also declares war on Germany.

Edith Cavell Memorial


It is announced that the Swardeston Church memorial window for Edith Cavell will be designed by Mr Herbert W Bryans.
